I was in an automobile accident in February of 1983, which my left leg being amputated at the knee. I went big game hunting for the first time in my life during the third season for elk in 1995. I scored a five by five bull and I was hooked.

As a handicapped individual, I subconsciously put limitations on my physical abilities. Left to my own devices I would never have given much thought to the possibility of hunting elk, mule deer or antelope.

I began writing my hunting stories in 1997. I figured that I should jot down a few notes about my experiences since hunting was something that it appeared as though I was going to pursue. Maybe something I write will inspire others with disabilities to pursue their own dreams, whatever they may be. I went snow skiing in Winter Park a few years after I lost my leg. I really enjoyed the day, but I was sore for three days afterward and figured it wasn't worth it. I haven't been back on skis since. You mileage may vary.

Living a dignified life is all that I suppose everyone is really looking for. For me that means accepting life on life's terms and doing the best with what I have. I might add that I think government intervention can seem to be at the superficial level a good thing for handicapped individuals. What I really like about hunting is there are no animals that have read the Americans with Disabilities Act. Hunting is real life at its most basic level. I have always looked at it as if I would starve, or have to turn into a vegetarian if I don't make the kill.

The whole aspect of hunting for your dinner does great things for one's self esteem. Sometimes the do-gooders who think they know what handicapped people want are just doing it to make themselves feel good.
