Shiny Crutches
During the 1998 antelope hunt Denny, Don ad I found ourselves wandering aimlessly around a ranch bordering the Pawnee Nation Grasslands looking for the elusive pronghorn, the Prince of the Plains.
We drove the truck into a flat are of land. On each side were bluffs that were about a half a mile long and a few hundred feet high. We got out and headed off in different directions to see if we could spot the small herd we saw earlier. We must have walked for an hour. I scrambled up the bluff to the east, sometimes on my hands ad knees, throwing my crutches ahead of me. When I got to the top looked around I could see no sign of my hunting partners or any antelope.
I finally spotted them on top of the other bluff. We waved our hats at each other and I saw them begin to descend toward the truck. I followed their lead as it was time for lunch and we would meet back at the vehicle.
When I finally arrived they both told me that they had no trouble keeping track of me as my aluminum crutches reflected the sun's light like a signal mirror. For the rest of the day I laid low and stayed near to the truck.
The next day I purchased some green, brown and tan paint and had a creative time painting those shiny crutches with a camo pattern. I don't know if it is Mossy Oak, Realtree or Predator, but I do know that they no longer signal my whereabouts two counties away.
